Homeopathic Remedies for Sleeplessness

Sooner or later, everyone has a difficult time getting to sleep at night. For many, a simple homeopathic remedy, which is effective and safe, is all that is needed for sleeplessness, also known as insomnia. It should not be necessary to take any medicine for weeks and months at a time for sleeping problems. If the inability to get a good night’s sleep persists, a homeopath should be consulted.

Kali phosphoricum 6c: If the cause of sleeplessness is nervous exhaustion from too much mental strain and exertion, this remedy may be useful. Individuals who might benefit from this remedy feel very weak, irritable, and in low spirits. Tasks seem to require great effort for these people, and the condition is helped by warmth. Kali phosphoricum 6c can be taken every 15 minutes for up to 1 hour, until you fall asleep.

Arsenicum album 30c: Persons who may benefit from this remedy are restless and apprehensive. They often wake up after midnight, get up, and pace around. In addition, they may be very fussy and may sleep with their hands above their heads. Arsenicum album 30c can be taken in the amount of one dose every four hours before bedtime and a second dose immediately before retiring.

Ignatia 30c: Persons who may benefit from this remedy are tired and yawn but are unable to sleep. When they do fall asleep, it is a light sleep only, with jerking and nightmares. These episodes may follow an emotional upset. Ignatia is useful for children and may be helpful in pregnancy. Ignatia 30c can be taken in the amount of one dose four hours before bedtime and a second dose immediately before retiring.

Coffea cruda 6c: When nervous excitement, from either good news or bad, keeps people’s minds from resting, they should try Coffea cruda. Symptoms are aggravated by cold air, and the mind and all the senses are fully alert. Individuals who may benefit from this remedy often awaken at 3 a.m. and are unable to return to sleep. Coffea cruda 6c can be taken every thirty minutes for up to one and a half hours.

Nux vomica 30c: People who may benefit from this remedy experience a light and disturbed sleep—and always feel as though they need more sleep. Bad dreams occur, which are often due to over-exertion or over-indulgence in food and drink. Individuals wake up in the middle of the night (about 3 a.m.).  Nux vomica 30c can be taken in the amount of one dose four hours before bedtime and a second dose immediately before retiring.

Cocculus 30c: A very useful remedy to re-establish sleep patterns which have been disrupted by shift work or jet lag. The person may feel drowsy and restless but cannot easily sleep. Try Cocculus 30c, four hours before desired bedtime, take again immediately before retiring.
